Miller Woods Trail Management Intern

General Information
The Miller Woods Trail Management Intern position was created to provide work experience for a student that is pursuing a career in natural resources, outdoor recreation, environmental science, or related field. The work objective is to complete a trail management plan for the Miller Woods trail system. Funding was made available through Yamhill Soil and Water Conservation District (YSWCD) and Natural Connections Inc., a nonprofit that supports educational venues at Miller Woods. Yamhill SWCD will manage and direct the intern who will perform work at Miller Woods which is located at 15580 NW Orchard View Road. Description of Work
Work schedule will involve up to four work days per week. Some work will be at Miller Woods and some at Yamhill SWCD’s office in McMinnville. The intern must provide their own transportation to and from Miller Woods. Applicant should be comfortable navigating difficult terrain and working in all weather conditions. Applicant should have demonstrated ability preparing written materials and completing assigned work tasks. Portions of work will be completed independently by the intern. The Intern will be supervised by YSWCD Executive Director or other SWCD staff and must work closely with volunteers to complete tasks.
Duties will include completing the Miller Woods Trail Management Plan including:
- Compiling costs associated with structures and work that has been completed in the past, assembling photos of all structures, etc..
- Compile a projection of hiking trail use by the public utilizing kiosk sign-ups, observations, and a mechanical vehicle counter.
- Complete the trail maintenance inventory data base.
- Identify problem areas and develop alternatives to remedy problems.
- Develop one page safety flyers to educate property users about hazards.
- Complete trail maintenance and improvement projects working with staff and volunteers. Organize public volunteer work days throughout the summer.
- Organize public walks or small events to make the property more available to the public.
- Prepare a written description of several trail sections that can be posted on web site.
Compensation
Funding is available for 416 hours to be compensated from June through August at $10.00 per hour.
